The Klein Karoo has some of the most spectacular dark skies in South Africa. Low light pollution and a generally cloud free sky make this a perfect spot for casual stargazing. Its also great for more serious astronomers to settle down for a night of heavenly delights.
About DARKSKYES
When James and Regina van Vuuren purchased their small farm outside De Rust in 2010, no light or sign of human intervention was visible from their verandah at night. This provided the perfect venue for astronomy tours. James had an interest in astronomy and over the years had assembled a collection of telescopes that been underused. After retiring in 2019, James and Regina established Dark Skyes De Rust on their off-grid property, and began hosting astronomy nights in 2020. These experiences have become a popular activity for visitors to De Rust, where night time activities are limited.
